Daily flights link the countries bringing people together. It is estimated that there are 5000 Scots in the UAE at any one time, whether as an established expat enjoying the high standards of living or on a visit to experience the delights of the UAE. People from the UAE are also travelling to Scotland to discover the scenery and enjoy all that Scottish tourism has to offer.
The world famous Scottish education system influences another ground where ties are further strengthened, in Scotland by the Al-Maktoum College in Dundee. The college, whose Patron is HH Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates Minister of Finance and Industry, promotes ties between the countries and works to share the Islam culture in the Western world and bring all cultures together. In a parallel, Edinburgh’s Heriot Watt campus hosts 4000 students in Dubai. This flourishing education between the two countries is evidence how much we appreciate learning from each other and how much we have to share.
As regards business and trade, the UAE is a primary trade partner for Scottish companies operating in the Middle East area. The link between the UAE and Scotland, both with reputable status as two leading nations in their respective regions, has attracted high-calibre companies to both countries amongst a wide array of sectors including food and drink, retail, education, tourism and, of course, Energy Oil and Gas. The Middle East is the second largest export market for Scottish companies involved in the Oil and Gas sector according to a recent survey of international activity carried out by Scottish Development International, figures indicate that these Oil and Gas exports are valued at £2 billion.
